Become a Governor

The Hessle Academy is managed by a Board of Governors that works alongside the Headteacher and Leadership Team to meet the educational needs of learners in a secure and safe environment.

Who can become a school governor?

The Board of Governors consists of two parent governors that are elected by the parent population and one staff governor who is elected from the staff from that particular school (Hessle High or Penshurst Primary). In addition to these elected members, members of the general public with an interest in education are appointed to serve on the Board.

Interested parties will be asked to complete an application form. No special qualifications are required, but you must be over 18 years of age.

What do school governors do?

The two main functions of a Local Governing Board are:

  • To hold the Headteacher and SLT to account for the educational performance and welfare of its learners and for the performance management of its staff.
  • In partnership with the Headteacher and SLT, the Board set a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction for the school.

The role of the Board of Governors is to ensure that the school provides learners with a good education by holding the senior leadership team to account.

More information on the role of a governor can be found here.

What is involved?

A governor is appointed in a voluntary unpaid capacity and can resign at any time. The Board of Governors meets as often as its business requires.

The Board of Governors is made up of members with different skills, knowledge and experience. The business of the school is progressed by the whole Board of Governors working together in the best interests of the learners. Every governor is expected to contribute to the conduct of school business and every governor can expect to learn something new.
